This course aims to explore the histories of non-western fashion, crafts, and industries of a variety of countries. The course gives students the opportunity to explore new fields of fashion history while at the same time providing them with research methods such as image, object and film analysis, and exhibition study.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Show understanding of the different fashion histories and geographies in the world beyond the West.  
  2. Demonstrate understanding of key research concepts and approaches, such as globalization, de-westernization, de-hierarchization, and be able to apply some of the key issues in debates in the cultural industries.
  3. Explain and write critically and independently about the discursive constructions of the histories of fashion. 
  4. Demonstrate transferrable skills used in qualitative research, visual, material, and textual analysis, critical thinking, writing, and presenting.
