Democracy Lab: Prison education workshop

Six-week summer course

In this course we look at how the carceral framework can challenge and reshape the way we learn, how we participate in our democracies, and what it means to be free. We explore ways that corporeal, emotional and psychic learning can be transformed through the experience of incarceration.On Monday and Wednesday mornings students will meet at La Santé prison in Paris, studying alongside peopled detained there. Together, participants will read texts that include memoir, poetry, and sources from history, including diaries and letters. Readings include W.S. Merwin, Malcolm X, James Baldwin, Azouz Begag, Rigoberta Menchu. On Tuesday mornings, in an AUP classroom, students will have time to reflect on their experience and exchange ideas about what they are learning.

This class is a cross-cultural exchange between French-speaking and English-speaking participants. Detained students, who primarily speak French, will learn alongside college students from an Anglophone university. The teachers will make every effort to ensure that all students feel comfortable and understand one another. Students from both institutions with any level of English or French, including beginning conversational level, are welcome. The final project involves collaborative work between AUP and detained students. On the last day of shared classes, we will have a celebratory event in which all students share their final project and other writings with an audience made up of people invited from the AUP community and from Centre Pénitentiaire La Santé.
