This course provides students with a foundation for understanding how IHRL, through both hard and soft law, has developed and intersects to guarantee human rights and dignity for individuals across the world. Through the study of three focus areas, namely transitional justice, gender, and regional systems, this course introduces key substantive and institutional issues in the field of IHRL and explores the establishment of human rights standards through treaties, soft law, and jurisprudence. The course provides students with the tools to critically analyze the way the international and regional human rights systems protect human rights and the effects of IHRL outside existing institutional frameworks.
